A Submarine Life

USS Norfolk SSN-714 — 1982 - 1985

All the images featured in “A Submarine Life”  were made with a Nikon F3HP, which was my go-to camera in the early 1980s.

Anytime there was an “evolution”, like getting underway, pulling into port, transiting on the surface, hosting special guests, or just capturing the many routine moments in the lives of the ship and crew, I grabbed this camera.

Its normal configuration included the MD-4 Motor Winder, the architectural grid focusing screen, and one of three lenses, which are pictured to the left and below. These include the Nikkor 50mm f1.4, Nikkor 35mm f1.4, and the Zoom-Nikkor 35-105mm, which was my favorite lens because of its utility. I’ve written nostalgically about this wonderful little lens in this blog post.
